Bio
Dr. Kathryn Madden is a licensed psychoanalyst, and a Diplomate in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC). Dr. Madden brings to her clinical work a Jungian orientation, a supportive presence, depth, insight, and creativity. For 10 years she served the Blanton-Peale Institute—a leading graduate training center and prominent NYC clinic—as Academic Dean, President & CEO, She continues to teach at the graduate and post-graduate level and to lecture at conferences and seminars, both nationally and internationally.

Her publications include the book, Dark Light of the Soul, released in 2008 by Lindisfarne Press (see review by Dennis Patrick Slattery), and numerous articles and book chapters. Some of her published articles include: "The Colors of Grace: Receiving and Weaving in the Space of the Transcendent;" "The Dark Interval: Inner Transformation Through Mourning and Memory;" "Teresa of Avila: The Will and the Weaving;" "Passion or Perjury: Center or Circumference?," "Spirit and the Other In Clinical Practice," and "Images of the Abyss." Additionally, she edited (2004) a two-volume series for the Journal of Religion & Health entitled "Metamorphosis: Conflict and Transformation," and is co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Psychology and Religion scheduled for publication by Springer Publications in 2009. She also has an extensive background in professional theatre and musical performance.

An alumna of Blanton-Peale, Kathryn received her Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in the field of Psychology & Religion, where she studied under Prof. Ann Belford Ulanov. Among the courses she teaches, the Symbolic Nature of the Psyche, the Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Practice, and The Use of Dreams in Psychoanalysis are some of her favorites. She has published numerous articles on the subject of depth psychology & religion, integrative theories of depth psychology, and theatre & the unconscious.

Kathryn is the Senior Editor of Quadrant: Journal of the C.G. Jung Foundation for Analytical Psychology and was the Executive Editor of the Journal of Religion & Health: Psychology, Spirituality & Medicine. Kathryn has served two terms as a Board member of the American Board for the Accreditation of Psychoanalysis and was elected Chair Elect of the ABAP Assembly. She has served on the Board of Trustees of the C.G. Jung Foundation, New York. A member of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis, in 2005, Dr. Madden led Blanton-Peale’s psychoanalytic program to become the first accepted by the State Education Department of New York to become license-qualifying.

In her downtime, Kathryn is a practitioner of yoga, an avid gardener, loves to swim and to take in art exhibitions, especially of the abstract expressionists.
